LaRaza jumps on Wave, moves into second

01/24/2010 7:34 PM - MONTERREY, Mexico (Jan. 24, 2010) – Allowing ill-timed goals on a night when they needed every break, the Milwaukee Wave fell to La Raza de Monterrey 15-8 on Sunday at Arena Monterrey.

The Wave (6-6) arrived in Monterrey with little rest following a 13-10 win over Baltimore at home the night before. They had won twice already at Arena Monterrey this season, but played from behind nearly the entire game Sunday.

After Milwaukee’s Kyle Lance scored to even the game 2-all 1:37 into the second quarter, Mark Ughy responded just 14 seconds later to put La Raza on top. It’s the third time this year the Wave have allowed a goal less than 15 seconds after an opposing kickoff.

Ughy then sent La Raza into the locker room with an 8-2 advantage when he scored his second goal with only 13 seconds remaining in the half.

Three-pointers in the third quarter by Jonathan Santos and Giuliano Oliviero allowed the Wave to stay within 13-8 as the period wound down, but Jorge Duran gave Monterrey another seven-point advantage with 26 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Evan McNeley had four points and seven blocks to lead Monterrey. Santos and Oliviero topped the Wave with three points apiece. Nick Vorberg took the loss in goal for the Wave.

Despite the victory, Monterrey suffered a blow when Byron Alvarez, the National Indoor Soccer League MVP a year ago, injured his leg in the second quarter. He was seen walking on crutches later in the game. Alvarez is Monterrey’s third-leading scorer with 20 points.
