The San Diego Sockers appear in this archive less as a club than as a source. Only six reports name them, but forty-two of the fifty-nine picks in the 2005 dispersal draft were San Diego players — more than seventy per cent of everyone who moved that day. Every one of the seven drafting clubs took at least one; Philadelphia and Chicago took nothing else.
The reports that survive catch the year before. On 23 July 2003 five Sockers players were selected in the expansion draft that stocked St. Louis and Monterrey. In 2004 the league announced that the business entrepreneur Raj Kalra had been introduced as majority owner at a press conference at the Hilton San Diego Resort. Six months later the roster was dispersed.
No individual honour in this archive went to a San Diego player, and the club took no picks of its own — by January 2005 there was nothing left to pick with. What the archive preserves instead is the shape of the dispersal: which clubs took whom, in what order, across twelve rounds. The full draft sheet, recovered as a plain-text file from a 2005 capture, is served at its original address.
The club's longer history runs well outside these files. It began as the Baltimore Comets in 1974, moved west in 1976 as the San Diego Jaws and took the Sockers name in 1978; two runs of five straight championships followed under Ron Newman, ten titles by 1992. None of that is in the recovered reports, and the archive should not be read as though it were.
